1. Do you have the right skills for the job?
While working at home may seem like a piece of cake, most home-based jobs require you to have the same amount of knowledge and skills as any regular office job would. Make sure you're not applying for anything that you don't even know how to do, or at least ensure that you can pick up the skills quickly if you really want to take on that work from home opportunity.
2. Are you fine with not being able to interact with people personally?
While there are some home-based jobs that will probably involve having meetings at a café or in your own home from time to time, most of them will have very minimal personal interaction. Thanks to the advancements in technology, there are ways to communicate without having to ever meet in person - such as through text or video chat, or over the phone. If you're a very sociable person who feels the need to be physically present when speaking to someone, then that work from home opportunity may not be what you're looking for.
3. Can you keep yourself motivated?
With no colleagues around to push you forward, no managers to loom over your shoulder, and all the distractions around your home, it can prove to be difficult to motivate yourself to stay focused and perform at optimum levels. Taking on a work from home opportunity requires you to be able to push yourself to do your best, no matter how dull or boring things seem to become.
4. Do you have the right tools for the job?
While a regular office job will provide you with a workstation complete with all the tools, software, and other items to get your job done, you're going to have to provide all that for yourself when you're working at home. Before you jump onto a work from home opportunity, make sure that you have everything you need to complete the tasks that the job will require of you, or that you can easily acquire them as you go along.
5. Do you have a workspace?
One of the biggest challenges you'll face when taking on a work from home opportunity is that you'll be working somewhere full of distractions. The best way to deal with this problem is to have a designated office space. When you step into this designated space, you'll be more focused and psyched up for work, and your family members will know not to disturb you when you're in that space.
Don't be in such a rush to get into this endeavor right away. This is your career we're talking about, and you need to think things through lest you have regrets later on. Do your homework to make sure you know what you're getting into, work-wise. When in doubt, seek a career counselor.
